During an active viral infection, the spike protein is continuously produced as the virus replicates. Your immune system recognizes and neutralizes the virus, and as a result, the spike protein levels decline over time. In most cases, it’s effectively cleared from the bloodstream within a couple of weeks.

With vaccines — especially mRNA vaccines — your cells produce a small amount of spike protein temporarily. This short-lived production is enough to train your immune system to recognize it, but the protein itself is quickly broken down and removed, usually within a few days. This transient presence is why vaccines are considered safe and do not leave lasting spike proteins in the body.

It’s also worth noting that research continues into exact timelines, but current evidence shows that spike proteins do not persist long-term in healthy individuals. Understanding this helps clarify misconceptions and reassures people that the body handles spike proteins efficiently.
